Living Lab 1: Thessaloniki, Greece

Regional Profile &
Vision

Located in the industrial heart of Central Macedonia, LL1 will focus on the “Athenian Brewery” as a primary pilot. The vision is to demonstrate how high-output industry will integrate with municipal planning to create a circular, low-carbon ecosystem in a dense peri-urban zone.

Technical & Digital Solutions

LL1 will pioneer carbon valorization. Key hardware will include a Solar Thermal Plant and a CCU unit for synthetic methanol production. These systems will be managed via the SpurUP digital suite, which aims to test the MaaS platform and AI-Analytics for sustainable manufacturing.

Governance & Methodology

The site will implement the Participatory Governance and Urban Planning Framework. By establishing a “Participatory Innovation Space”, LL1 is designed to bridge the gap between the Athenian Brewery, the Municipality of Thessaloniki, and Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia.

Targeted Impact

Environment

Will target a 100% CO2 reduction for installed thermal capacity.

Engagement

Aims to engage >500 stakeholders and train 20+ municipal officers.

Innovation

Seeks to achieve a 30% increase in regional adoption of net-zero technologies.

Focused on the green transition of the local industrial ecosystem, this Living Lab centers on the Athenian Brewery’s facilities. It will demonstrate the integration of a parabolic trough Solar Thermal System for CO2-free steam production, alongside a Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) plant that synthesizes e-methanol from captured emissions. Additional initiatives include reusing treated wastewater for agricultural irrigation, reclaiming critical materials from brewery packaging, and deploying digital tools (like AI-Analytics, SERVE, and REACT) to monitor environmental risks and air quality in real-time.
